Every year in July and August the juicy Lamyai, the Thai word for Longan fruits (dragon eyes) (Dimocarpus longan), is appearing at the local Thai markets. The season for Longan, a relative to Lychee, is short, so everybody in the North of Thailand, takes his chance to get as much as possible from the Longan fruits. The taste is reminiscent of Lychee crossed with Coconut. Dragon Eyes, Longan fruits are easy to peel, but the pip is unedible. They should also have a strengthening and anti-aging effect. Longan fruits are rich in Vitamin C and contain the minerals calcium and iron.

The fruits are also used as an ingredient for mouthwatering Thai Curries, like the Green Thai Curry with Longan Fruits. Canned Longan fruits in syrup, in acceptable quality and dried longans, a healthy snack or ingredient for muesli or cakes, are available around the year. Dried dragon eyes are also used to prepare fruit tea.
